Adult visit to Storrington

AGM/BBQ

Welcome to another year, we hope you have all recovered from Christmas and of course,  the snow.  Here is a short recap on our recent activities.

Our Boulogne lunch in November was a great success.  On a rather wet and windy day, a full coach set off for the Channel Tunnell.  We stopped off at Auchan for some shopping and then headed to the Hostellerie de la Riviere for our much anticipated lunch.  We were not disappointed.  The lunch was superb and we will be returning again later this year.  The lunch has been booked for Saturday, 13th November 2010.  You can reserve your seats on the attached slip.

In December, 7 members of the Twinning Committee travelled to Villerest to participate in the St. Nicolas market.  This was a huge event that not only involved the Twinning families, but the entire town.  Everyone pulled together for this occasion, right down to owner of the local bar, offering us café and conversation from time to time.  Local children had decorated floats, and the  procession passed by the stalls scattered around the town square and ramparts. We were able to offer British produce such as homemade  mincepies, sausage rolls,

shortbread, treacle tarts and Christmas cake plus haggis and shots of whisky. As well as music & dancing in the streets, men toasting chestnuts, a huge Christmas tree lay bare, waiting for the children of Villerest and Cerionne to decorate it. The  local Mayor also took part in the celebrations.

The Cassandre Choir (the French equivalent to the Sandgate Singers) held a concert in the church in the evening after the market – there was not an spare seat to be had. It was very enjoyable and it certainly felt as if Christmas had arrived.

Cerionne, Villerest’s  twinned town in Italy, also attended bringing their local produce. Because of this visit, we hope to include exchanges and visits with Cerionne, which is situated between Milan & Turin.

So, watch this space, we could be heading off their   later this year.

To get the New Year underway, we kicked off last week with our Nouvel An. We had a relaxing lunch followed by a light hearted quiz.  We sampled some delicious sparkling rosé from Simon Hawkins’ vineyard.  He has been producing various wines in this area for many years.  Some are very good indeed.
